How to make a phone call
direct to Tasmania from America: Until 19-Aug-1996, phone numbers
in Tasmania were six digits long with a three digit area code. These old
six-digit numbers stopped working on 18-May-1997, and Tasmania now has
eight-digit numbers like the rest of Australia.
But, if you know the old area code and number, it is easy to determine what
to dial:
- Dial the new area code, (03), followed by a 6
- Dial the last digit of the old area code.
- Dial the old six-digit telephone number
For instance, to dial the old Hobart number (002) 123456, you would dial (03)
6212-3456.
The old area codes were (002) for southern Tasmania and the east coast, (003)
for northern Tasmania and the north-east, and (004) for north-west Tasmania and
the west coast. Thus even if the old area code is unknown, the correct new
eight-digit number can often still be determined.
But don't call direct unless you want to spend a
lot of money. Use a calling card or a prepaid phone service instead.
